Why We Start Every Swordsperson in Longsword

Pelican City Swords has plurality right in the name. So its understandable that at a sword sampler event, or for anyone just interested in getting started, to ask one of the most common questions we hear: "Do I have to do longsword if I’m only interested in one-handed blades?" or "Can I jump straight into saber/rapier/etc.?"

The short answer: Yes, everyone starts with Longsword Fundamentals.

While this might seem like an unnecessary hoop, it is the most intentional pedagogical decision we have made as a club. Requiring a single foundational cohort isn’t about preferring one weapon over another. It is about setting every student up for long-term safety, body awareness, and rapid mastery across all European bladed arts.

Here is why our curriculum is structured this way and how it directly benefits your journey as a swordsperson.

1. Building Large Motor Patterns Before Fine Mechanics

Historical European Martial Arts requires a refined understanding of distance, tempo, balance, and spatial awareness. The Italian longsword is an exceptional teaching tool because it demands two-handed engagement and large-body biomechanics.

When you hold a sword with two hands, your body naturally engages its core, structural alignment, and hips. It forces you to learn how to drive power from the ground up through footwork rather than muscling a blade with your arms alone. Asking a beginner—who may not yet be attuned to their body’s spatial footprint—to immediately manage the fine, high-precision point control and asymmetric body posture of other sword disciplines may lead to frustration and bad habits.

By building physical literacy through longsword first, your arms, shoulders, and hips learn fundamental structural mechanics. When you eventually pick up another weapon, those principles translate instantly.

2. Universal Concepts: Measure, Tempo, and Line Control

At their core, all historical fencing arts rely on the exact same tactical truths:

  • Measure (Distance): Knowing when you are safe, when you can strike, and how to step without compromising balance.

  • Tempo (Timing): Recognizing the moment an opponent initiates an action and acting within that opening.

  • The Bind & Line Control: Feeling pressure through the steel to determine whether to attack, defend, or yield.

Longsword makes these abstract concepts immediately tactile and visible. Because the weapon moves with deliberate weight and clear geometry, students absorb the core theory of swordplay much faster. Once you understand how to control the center line and judge measure with a longsword, learning broadsword, saber, sidesword, etc., becomes a matter of applying known concepts to a different tool rather than starting from scratch.

3. Safety Culture & Shared Foundations

Martial arts require immense trust between training partners. At Pelican City Swords, safety isn't just about wearing protective gear. It is a shared culture of blade control, calibration, and mutual respect.

Our 6-week Longsword Fundamentals cohort acts as our universal safety onboarding. It ensures that every member on our floor, regardless of what weapon they eventually focus on, has passed through the exact same safety protocol. When you step into regular practice or pick up steel, you can trust that your partner knows how to pull a thrust, control an edge strike, and respect your physical boundaries.

4. A Clear, Transparent Path Forward

We believe learning a martial art should be clear and structured. You should never have to guess what comes next or feel lost on an open floor:

  • Stage 1: Free Sampler Night — Come swing a sword, meet the group, and try basic cuts and footwork with zero commitment.

  • Stage 2: Longsword Fundamentals (6 Weeks) — Master posture, safety, fundamental cuts, guards, footwork, and tactical theory. (Required prerequisite for all members).

  • Stage 3: Ongoing Training & Elective Disciplines — Unlock any other weapon system study, sparring, and advanced classes.

The Bottom Line

Our single-entry pipeline isn't a restriction, it's an accelerator. By establishing strong body mechanics, shared safety standards, and core tactical concepts in Longsword Fundamentals, we make sure every student at Pelican City Swords has the foundation necessary to excel in whichever discipline they choose.
