Overview

Ever wanted to learn how to actually use a sword? This 8-week introductory cohort takes you from holding a longsword for the first time to confidently fencing with real steel equipment.

We take a structured, step-by-step approach based on historical 14th-century Italian martial arts. You won't be thrown into the deep end or expected to be an elite athlete. Whether you’re looking for a fun physical hobby, love historical combat, or have never stepped foot in a gym before, our classes are designed to be welcoming, patient, and easy to follow.

Completing this course unlocks access to our ongoing Intermediate Longsword classes so you can continue building your skills.

No experience is needed, and there is no gear to buy. We provide all training weapons and protective gear.

What You'll Learn Across 8 Weeks

  • Weeks 1–2: The Basics — Stances, footwork, balance, and how to deliver clean cuts and thrusts safely.

  • Weeks 3–4: Defense & Distance — Learning how to control space, parry attacks, and safely counter your opponent.

  • Weeks 5–6: Timing & Tactics — Understanding when to move, reading your partner’s actions, and introducing gentle, structured partner play.

  • Weeks 7–8: Putting It Together — Guided swordplay, tactical drills, and your first controlled free-fencing sessions.

What's Included

  • Eight 2-hour hands-on sessions (16 total instructional hours)

  • All training gear provided: steel practice swords, fencing masks, and throat protection (gorgets)

  • Clear, structured curriculum with optional pre-class videos to watch between sessions

  • Small group setting with plenty of individual attention and support

What to Bring

  • Water bottle

  • Comfortable athletic clothing (long pants recommended)

  • Flat-soled sneakers or athletic shoes

  • Have your own mask or gorget? Feel free to bring it. Otherwise, we’ve got you covered.

New to all this? Join us for a free "Sword Sampler" night to try holding a sword before committing to a cohort.
